Why:We, as students, want our voices heard in the presidential election on the growing immigration crisis. We are affected the most and many of us are voters. We have studied the issue and we will release our findings and solutions on June 12th. Hear what we have to say! Where:Rudy Lozano Leadership Academy (2570 South Blue Island, Chicago IL, 60608, 773.890.0055) On Thursday, June 12th at 10:45 am, we the students of Rudy Lozano Leadership Academy will speak to the presidential candidates and address how they are not focusing on the immigration issues as much as they need to. We have studied many different immigration topics (see below) which we deal with personally every day. Voting makes a very big impact, and we will be registering new voters on Thursday. If the candidates want our votes they must hear our voices! We are inviting Barack Obama and John McCain to inform them about the following issues during our symposium:
The Border: presenting a museum display showing two versions of the U.S. border (walled and not walled) as well as their own conclusions;
Criminalization of immigrants: presenting an open letter to the presidential candidates;
Separation/deportation of families: presenting a mock trial with the U.S. government and immigration legislation on trial (the Dream Act and Child Citizenship Protection Act);
Unity of immigrants: presenting 4 slide shows / videos on immigrants from different countries and on the indigenous peoples of America;
Media coverage of immigration: creating a student-friendly guide to the media (http://rlla.wikispaces.com/media) and hosting this press conference.
